“I don’t think as humans we engage in anything like that without some hope that we will accomplish the goal. But I was really clear going in… this is definitely an overwhelming experience. Drinking from a firehose.”
In this captivating episode of Good Life Stories, host Tracy Crowley sits down with Dr. Tammy Yard-McCracken to explore her remarkable transformation from psychotherapist to certified Krav Maga instructor. The conversation delves into how an unexpected encounter with this Israeli combat system reshaped her professional identity and personal understanding of her own capabilities.
Dr. Yard-McCracken begins by explaining Krav Maga as the hand-to-hand combat fighting system developed by the Israeli Defense Forces. Unlike many martial arts practitioners who seek out their discipline deliberately, she describes her path as “a really kind of backward story.” With prior exposure to various traditional martial arts through her children’s activities, Dr. Yard-McCracken initially approached Krav Maga not for personal training but as a potential therapeutic resource for her trauma patients.
As a practicing psychotherapist specializing in working with survivors of violence, she had identified a gap in traditional therapy – the inability to fully address the embodied aspect of trauma recovery. “There was this piece of agency that we could never really quite put our thumb on,” she explains, noting that some therapeutic goals “just can’t be done on the couch.” This professional curiosity led to a chance meeting with a Krav Maga instructor and her first referrals of patients to try the training.
The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Dr. Yard-McCracken relocates across the country and finds herself with unexpected free time while waiting for her new therapy practice to launch. What began as a way to fill time quickly became a passion as she immersed herself in intensive training. The episode captures her extraordinary journey of being invited to instructor training after just six months of practice – a path she candidly admits she “doesn’t recommend” to others.
Dr. Yard-McCracken shares the intense physical and mental challenges of completing all three phases of instructor certification in just one year, a process that typically requires much more time and several prerequisite rank advancements. Her description of taking the final certification test merely twelve months after her first class highlights both her determination and the unexpectedness of her success. “The entry level grading or rank to be an instructor is five ranks in, and nobody does that in a year,” she explains, attributing her achievement to extraordinary amounts of practice and supportive mentors.
A particularly moving moment in the episode comes when Dr. Yard-McCracken describes sitting alone on a California beach after passing her instructor certification, trying to process an achievement so far beyond what she had imagined possible for herself. “I couldn’t even organize my thoughts because the experience was, I’m on Mars now… This is so outside of what I thought would ever happen in my life,” she reflects, encapsulating the disorienting power of exceeding one’s own expectations.
The conversation also explores her relationship with Eyal Yanilov, head of Krav Maga Global, whose encouragement of women in training and leadership roles provided crucial support. Dr. Yard-McCracken describes how his honest feedback and belief in her abilities helped her navigate a predominantly male environment where she often “stuck out like a sore thumb.”
The episode concludes with Dr. Yard-McCracken explaining how her professional life evolved following certification, eventually leading her to open her own training center with her husband and transition away from full-time psychotherapy practice. While she maintains her therapy license, her story illustrates how being open to unexpected opportunities can lead to profound career shifts and personal growth.
Throughout the conversation, listeners gain insight into not only the technical aspects of Krav Maga training but also the psychological impact of pushing beyond perceived limitations. Dr. Yard-McCracken’s journey from helping trauma survivors find empowerment to discovering her own unexpected strengths offers a compelling narrative about personal transformation and the surprising places where we might find our calling.
